Piano, keyboard, flute, recorder and music theory lessons with
Joanne Phillips-Robinson BMus (Hons), PGDip (Music Therapy), CT ABRSM

My musical learning began at the age of 4, when I started learning the violin. As many of us did, I learnt the recorder at school; I progressed on to the piano aged 8 and the clarinet aged 11. I started learning the flute as an adult after completing a Music
degree and then qualifying as a Music Therapist.
I began teaching in 2003 during my final year at University and went on to teach privately in Surrey, as well
as for the Surrey council music service. In this time I have had experience of teaching the piano, keyboard,
clarinet and music theory privately on an individual basis (NB I can still offer basic clarinet lessons). With the
Surrey council music service, I have experience of teaching children in mainstream schools on an individual
basis (piano, keyboard and flute) and on a whole class basis (flute and clarinet). I have a particular interest in
special educational needs teaching and through the music service taught at a school for children with an autism
diagnosis. Here, I taught piano, flute, recorder, clarinet, saxophone and singing on an individual basis, and recorder also on a group basis. My interest in SEN teaching also extended to my private teaching. In July 2008, I completed the ABRSM's Certificate of Teaching course.
My teaching philosophy is that everyone should have the chance to learn an instrument, regardless of ability! I will match my teaching to the ability of my pupil. I welcome pupils of any age and ability, and teach to about Grade 5 standard. Pupils can choose whether to progress through graded music exams, the ABRSM music medals (for flute, recorder and clarinet), or learn for fun. When we first meet, I will go through the pupil's aims and expectations and we will regularly review lesson progress.
"Both my daughter and son had the pleasure of Joanne teaching them piano. She is extremely patient and kind and allowed the children to work at their own pace. My son is on the autistic spectrum and it was great to see how proud he was to have learned some small pieces, only achievable through Joanne's tolerant and flexible approach". (Julie - Banstead, Surrey)
"Jo is an excellent and very patient teacher who knows how to bring the best out of her students. Her relaxed and friendly teaching style makes lessons very enjoyable; and so it is easy to progress. Her knowledge of both the practical and theory piano grades meant that I felt thoroughly prepared for all of the examinations that I was entered for. It is a lovely skill to be able to play the piano and I'm very grateful to Jo for teaching me". (Sarah - Banstead, Surrey)
